By Lydia Wilcox, Reporter ‘21

In this past decade everything from the jumpsuits of the 1970s to the bucket hats of the 1990s have been revived. As 2019 draws to a close, we look forward to the fashion trends of the future while also recalling our favorite trends of the past 10 years.

One of Friends’ Central’s most fashionable students, Lily Forbes ‘21, disclosed some of her favorite fashion trends of the past, her current fashion icons, and her predictions for future fashion trends. Some of Lily’s favorite trends of the last couple years are styles from the 90's and early 2000s. Lily specifically appreciated the come-back of low-rise, loose fitting pants and platform shoes. The fashion icons that Lily draws inspiration from include the Spice Girls, Vivianne Westwood, and @internetgirl. The Spice Girls were an English pop music group from the ‘90s who doubled as fashion icons. Vivianne Westwood is a fashion designer who popularized punk and new wave fashion during the 1970s, and @internetgirl is top-seller on Depop. In regards to the future, Lily predicts that fashion trends of the next decade will embrace the revival of tasteful goth fashion, a style originally popularized in the 1980s. In addition, Lily hopes to see fashion trends that do not conform to typical gender norms.

Outside of the Friends’ Central Community other experts are making predictions, too. Par Eugénie Trochu, a journalist for Vogue, predicts a rise in popularity of punk fashion. Punk fashion styles include plaid patterns, boots, and spikes. Trochu also notes that ‘80s fashion trends will be brought back in the coming years. She believes looks such as shoulder pads, neon, and houndstooth will make an appearance in 2020. I hope that everyone is getting excited for the arrival of the new decade and all of the fascinating fashion trends that come with it.
