Road To FSLs - Boys Varsity Basketball

By Teddy Lohse ‘28 (Reporter)

Shimada Gymnasium has housed many great basketball players throughout its history. It has been the home gym for so many different FCS boys varsity basketball teams, and this year is no exception. When you walk into Shimada to watch a game, you can see both of FCS’s top-notch varsity basketball teams hungry for an FSL title.

Varsity boys basketball has plenty of motivation to see the team get back to the top of the Friends School League after a tough loss in the finals last year to Academy of the New Church. The team is going to look different this year, after losing three seniors to college last year. Two of those seniors were the team's top scorers in Fazl Oshodi 24’, who averaged 14.5 points per game, and Muhsin Muhammad 24’, who averaged 17.3 points per game. Together, that is an average of 31.8 points per game. That’s a lot, and Coach Devin Coleman 11’ has hopes that the rest of the team can pick that up.

The varsity team has had 6 games from the time of the writing of this article (12/6). All of them are losing efforts, but there is hope to turn it around. None of these losses come from Friends School League teams, which gives hope that by the time league play comes around, the squad would have figured out their struggles. You can see growth even from the first game against Perkiomen school, the reigning PAISAA champions. No one really played their best that game, but by the time the team’s second game against The Phelps School came, you could see some of our top players shine. Both junior guard, Gabe Moore, and Senior Center, Nigel Pierman, had 21-point games. Both are now top three in points per game for the team, along with sophomore shooting guard, Patrese Feamster. The latest game since December 6 was a losing effort against The Pennington School, but signs of improvement were already visible. They only lost by 3, and the teams were going back and forth all game. There was a minute left and Pennighton was up by 1. FCS got the ball, and they were trying to run a play, but they turned it over. The game ended in heartbreak, but it’s still better than most of their games so far. If they can stay in a game with good competition, then when the FSL teams start coming around, the team will be ready for any team.

Throughout all the adversity the team has faced so far, all they need is a win to start a run. Their next game is scheduled for tomorrow (12/7) against Atlantic Christian School in New Jersey. Coach Coleman hopes for a win, and a big game from some of his star players, such as

Su Alleyne 25’, Patrese Feamster 27’, and Gabe Moore 26’. Yet he also needs all of the rest of his team to step up, because he knows from his time here that basketball is a team sport, and a good team always has a deep bench. This is a truly good team, but every good team has its bumps in the road. Remember, all it takes is a win for a season to turn around.
