Friday Night Lights

By Jonah Casel (Reporter ‘27)

Friends’ Central School’s Friday Night Lights event happened on Friday, October 13, 2023. The event consisted of four games: girls’ tennis, girls’ soccer, and boys’ soccer played against Germantown Friends, and water polo played against Lower Merion. Water polo won 16-10, but unfortunately, girls’ tennis lost 3-2, girls’ soccer lost 6-1, and boys’ soccer lost 2-0. These games were highlighted by a pink out. Students were encouraged to wear pink during the day, and pink FCS shirts were sold in the cafeteria during lunch and before the games.

Noah Liebman ‘27, who attended Friday Night Lights, described the games as a “fun experience.” Noah believes there should be more school spirit events like Friday Night Lights. He shared, “My favorite part was the atmosphere. I hope it happens again.” Noah wishes that Friday Night Lights could have included a game for the boys’ JV soccer team, for whom he plays goalie. Noah said that the crowd was “a 7/10 on the noise scale.”

Max Copelovitch ‘27, who plays for the boys’ soccer team, also enjoyed Friday Night Lights. He commented, “There was an amazing energy.” He especially liked having the crowd watching. He added, “It’s fun for the players, and it’s fun to cheer on your friends.” Max really enjoyed playing at night as well, although he had some suggestions for improvement. He could not see the scoreboard for the majority of the game because the flood lights were too low. He also noticed that the field was torn up and slippery from the other teams playing on the field and because of the increased humidity before the game. He offered, “We should have more night games, but it would be much better if we experimented the night before, to make sure the conditions are better.” Overall, Max enjoyed watching other games, as well as playing in his own.

Friday Night Lights was a resounding success. Thank you to the Quake, Student Council, and the FCS Athletics Department for putting this event together!
